The original Claddagh design debuted in the 17th century. Having been kidnapped on a sea voyage an Irish servant spent years in captivity with a goldsmith who transformed him into an artful craftsman. When this man finally returned to his longtime love in Galway he gave her this ring in an oath to spend the rest of his life by her side.
